By earning a record-breaking $55.7 million at the box office during its opening weekend, Sex and the City shattered box office records for having the most ticket sales for an R-rated comedy. The film’s star, Sarah Jessica Parker was completely surprised by her show’s silver screen success.

"To be No. 1 is unexpected," the 43-year-old actress told People Magazine at the MTV Movie Awards. "Beyond that, it would be greedy for us to think about, talk about" how much it might make.

With the movie finally here a long four years after the beloved HBO series came to an end, fans were definitely jumping with excitement. "They had to have barricades in New York for the audiences," Parker says, "People have been really enthusiastic, people have been really nice."
